Mare script V1.0

Mare

Written By Victor Vargas Vilafuerte

EXT. SKY - NIGHT

Night sky. Text: BEBE MOMIA Y COTORRA FILMS PRESENT

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE A BUILDING - NIGHT

A common street outside an apartment building. We see windows of the apartments but only one is on. Credits appear and read:

MARE

INT. A ROOM - NIGHT

A small room with one window. In the room there is only a bed and a table. On the table there are a lamp, a bottle of alcohol and some sleeping pills. A WOMAN is on the room wearing a sleeping gown. She takes the pills and drinks them with a glass full of alcohol, takes off her shoes and places them facing the bed. She gets into the bed and turns off the lamp.

MATCH CUT TO:

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE A BUILDING. NIGHT

The window that was on before is now off. A DEMON appears and floats towards the door of the apartment that had the window lit previously.

INT. HOUSE CORRIDOR - NIGHT

The DEMON floats through the corridor and slides through the keyhole of a door.

INT. A ROOM - NIGHT

The DEMON floats next to the shoes and stands over the WOMAN who sleeps. The Woman opens her eyes with an expression of fear but the Demon covers her face.

FADE TO BLACK.

EXT. INDUSTRIAL EXTERIOR - DAY

Empty abandoned industrial exterior under a highway. The WOMAN opens her eyes and looks around. A voice that seems to be far away says

VOICE 1 (whispering)

Come, come. Help me! A screeching sound can be heard and then percussions which

increase in intensity. The Woman seems scared and walks following a path getting away from the sound and towards the voice that asks for help.

EXT. OUTSIDE AN ABANDONED BUILDING - CONTINUOUS

An abandoned building full of graffiti. The WOMAN gets inside through a hole on one of the walls.

INT. ABANDONED BUILDING FIRST FLOOR - CONTINUOUS

An abandoned building in darkness with stairs that go the second floor. The WOMAN goes up the stairs while looking constantly back. The noises continue this time around the building.

INT. ABANDONED BUILDING SECOND FLOOR - CONTINUOUS

Different rooms, some without ceiling but all full of water. The WOMAN walks around. The voice calls louder

VOICE 1

Help me

Noises continue around, and vocal menacing sounds. The Woman turns around. Shapes move behind some doors but identity can't be defined. The Woman starts bleeding on the eyes, nose and hears. She goes up another set of stairs.

EXT. ROOFTOP OF ABANDONED BUILDING - DAY

A rooftop covered of snow. The WOMAN walks into a room on the rooftop. The voice can be heard this time strongly.

VOICE 1

It is coming, help me.

INT. ROOM ON ROOFTOP - DAY

A small room full of debris. A DYING WOMAN identical that the woman is lying on the floor covered with blood and is holding a dead baby on her hands. The WOMAN enters the room and sees the Dying Woman. The Dying Woman extends her arms offering the baby to the Woman.

DYING WOMAN

Help me! It is here now!

The Woman turns around disgusted but finds that behind her there is a EVIL WOMAN who looks exactly as the Woman holding a knife that cuts her way out. The Evil Woman stabs the Woman. While stabbing the woman the Evil Woman's face turns into the DEMON's face.

INT. A ROOM - MORNING

The WOMAN wakes up scared. She looks around and tranquilizes.

INT. KITCHEN - LATER

A common looking kitchen. A fridge can be seen and The WOMAN enters the kitchen and picks a garbage bag from a cabinet. She opens the fridge and takes out a dead baby wrapped in clothes putting it after in the garbage bag.

EXT. STREET OUTSIDE A BUILDING - MORNING

The WOMAN walks out of the apartment and walks away carrying the garbage bag.

EXT. PARK - MORNING

A park full of trees, there is a garbage bin. The WOMAN walks to the garbage can and puts the garbage bag in the garbage bin. Then she walks away.

FADE TO BLACK.

Elevator Pitch

Title

“Mare”

Elevator pitch

“A sleeping young woman is visited by a demon that transforms her dreams into a nightmare forcing her to succumb to her biggest fear.”

Short description of the project

The video will be a mix between video art and fiction combining different techniques of video and animation. The goal is to create an audiovisual piece that goes beyond a simple horror short and pushes the audience into further thinking of the meaning. The main target audience is young adults (18-40) but it can be also be seen by teenagers and older people.

Visual treatment

The look will be similar to the trailer I have already done for this project ( I did the trailer two years ago and I have been waiting for some time to actually do this project)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-33sErHawo&list=UUiN2-bnPcTJvhUpcCdG0T-w&index=4&feature=plcp

The techniques I will mix will be: video, stop motion, painting with light.

The demon will be recorded with long exposures/stop motion in order to have it blurry. All the demon and sleeping sequences will be shot at night in interiors while the nightmare sequences will be shot with daylight both in exteriors and interiors. The light on the nightmare sequences will be soft (ideally only shot on overcast weather) and I will add a cold filter to the nightmares to give unity.

Equipment

1. 5D Mark II camera (possibly two)

2. Boompole

3. Directional microphone

4. Zoom recorder

5. Hot lights and gels

Team

Due to the complexity of the project I plan to do it with a group of people who will help me specially on the production stage (recording, fx, recording of music, make-up, sound, etc ). I will do the pre-production (scouting, script, tests) and post production (editing). This people won’t be part of the photography program.

Inspiration

As I mentioned before this I a project I have been waiting to do for at least a couple of years, among my inspiration there are paintings, films, novels, tales, etc. Just to mention some:

Henry Fuselli paintings of nightmares

Ken Russel’s “Gothic” interpretation of the nightmare.

A nightmare on Elm’s street by Wes Craven

In the mouth of madness by Carpenter

Hard-boiled wonderland and the end of the world by Murakami

Etc.

Etc.

CMYK vs RGB printing

CMYK proof (not bad)

Even though the preview on the screen looked too flat and there was a shift on the greens in my image (specially on the highlights) when the print came out it was ok. Actually I liked the final result considering that it was a CMYK. The changes regarding the CMYK print to the RGB print were a warmer touch on all the image and a slight lose on the contrast.

For the colour checker the main change were in the colours red and the blue, and I had to do a big correction on the midtones of the photograph otherwise it should have given a dark result.

RGB print (good)

The RGB print came as I expected. Since my photograph was already calibrated for the satin paper on the big printer I didn't have problems. The colours on the colour checker were perfect too.
